No, you’re not too busy to live a healthy lifestyle

We want to do workouts that we enjoy and look forward to. We never want it to feel like a chore. This may seem like common sense, but some people forget that aging is part of life; it’s going to happen. So deciding to put in the effort to become and stay fit and healthy is a life enhancement, and one we CAN attain by incorporating exercises and routines that are relevant to our capabilities.

Setting habits takes time, but just like everything else, your workouts will become a habit the longer you stay consistent. And getting older doesn’t have to mean giving up the activities you enjoy. You can still exercise and learn how to prevent injuries to stay healthy and independent.

The best way to reach goals or make lifestyle changes is to take small steps that you know are achievable for you. Whether it's taking Vitamin D regularly in winter or improving your mobility, here are some fitness and wellbeing tips to help you thrive mentally and physically and feel alive and healthy every day.

Get Outside

Whether you're working out or sitting on a bench reading a book, fresh air is good for the soul. Take a look here to read more about how you can incorporate more outdoor time into your busy days.

Schedule your workout like any other appointment or meeting

You schedule meetings, dates, and appointments all the time. And for the most part, you get to all of them, even if the day seems hectic. Scheduling makes your day more manageable and easier to plan. Next time you’re planning out your week or day, set aside at least 30 minutes for a workout–it could be a walk, jog, yoga flow or weight lifting session–as long as it will make you happy!

Workout with your family, friends or pets

Make your workout part of your quality time with friends and family. It’s better than watching a TV show or scrolling through social media. Workouts can also scale to fit the needs of your family and pets. Dogs love to walk and run–and they need it! If you have kids, walk to the park with them or play some frisbee or soccer.

Make getting to the workout the easiest part of the workout

Think of this: if you have to drive an extra 20 minutes to the gym, you may be more likely to skip that session. Find a close and convenient gym, or buy your own home gym equipment. Find exercises and activities that you can do without a lot of planning or gear. There are countless free home YouTube workouts that only require you! There are also many workout apps that you can download and cater to your own needs and goals.

Make your routine a habit

Keep your workout schedule consistent. Setting habits takes time, but just like everything else, your workouts will become a habit the longer you stay consistent. Just as your child may have a sports class on Tuesdays and Thursdays, you can have your own fitness days on Mondays and Wednesdays. Pick your days, and stick with them as best as you can.

Remember: Food over fitness

Food is one of the constants of our lives, something we truly can’t function without. Fueling yourself with good food simply makes sense. When you combine healthy eating with your exercise, you’ll notice you feel even better! When a day comes up where finding your exercise time is difficult, making smart choices with your meals will help keep your body and mind in top shape. Eat as many whole foods as possible, like fruits and vegetables and lean meats.

Move in a way that’s fun

If you don’t enjoy running, don’t run. If you don’t enjoy lifting weights, don’t lift weights. Move in a way you enjoy, and you’ll see the benefits much quicker. Your exercise won’t be a burden because it’s fun! Maybe it’s a dance class, yoga, hiking, martial arts, cycling, soccer, or tennis. If you stop forcing the workouts, following what you’re “supposed” to be doing, then the habit won’t take hold. So do what moves you!
